Whilst vs. While (意味の差異と例文)

「Whilst」も「while」正しいスペルです。

二つとも「その間、その同時に」と言う意味で使われます。

「Whilst」はイギリスでよく使うスペルで、「while」はアメリカでよく使うスペルです。接続詞または副詞で使われると意味は同じです。ただ、発音がちょっと違います。「Whilst」は最後にTが入って[wile-st]と発音し、「while」はT無しで[wile]と発音します。

イギリスの英語を使う国でも「whilst」を使います。ネイティブじゃなくて、どちを使えばいいか確かにわからない場合、学校の先生や職場の上司と相談してみることをお勧めします。

例文

接続詞として使用される「whilst」と「while」は下記の例文のように使用されます。

I did the dishes while my sister vacuumed the house. (姉が掃除機をかけている間、私は皿洗いをした。)
The design of the refrigerator was top notch, whilst the engineering was careless. (冷蔵庫のデザインはトップクラスで、エンジニアリングは不注意でした。)
Mom set the table while the soup was simmering. (スープが煮えている間に母はテーブルを置いた。)

下記の例文のように形容詞として「whilst」と「while」が使われます。しかし、形容詞ではあまり使われません。

In the time while the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the air was crisp and free of any trace of human civilization. (恐竜が地球を歩き回っている間、空気はパリッとしていて、人間の文明の痕跡もありませんでした。)
The period whilst the egg is hatching is when it is most vulnerable.(卵が孵化している期間は、最も脆弱な時期です。)
I waited around during the hour while the laundry machine was running. (洗濯機が動いている間、私は1時間ほど待った。)

下記は「while」を名詞として使用される例文です。ただ、「whilst」は名詞としては使われません。

The two coworkers worked on the presentation slides for a while before moving on to other tasks. (2人の同僚はプレゼンテーションスライドをしばらく作業した後、他の作業に移りました。)
It will take a while before they call the next person in line. (次の人に電話するまで、しばらく時間がかかります。)
They easily hiked up the trail, singing all the while. (彼らはその間ずっと歌い続けながら簡単にトレイルをハイキングしました。

下記は「while」を動詞として使用する例文です。動詞として使うことは珍しいで、一般的に「away」とともに使われ,「spend (過ごす)」と同じ意味で使われます。ただ、「whilst」は動詞としては使われません。

Thomas whiled away his Sunday morning reading in bed and drinking tea.（トーマスは日曜日の朝, ベッドで本を読んだりお茶を飲んだりしながら過ごした。）
In the summer, we while away the hours playing in the sun with our dog. (夏には、私たちは犬と一緒に太陽の下で遊ぶ時間を過ごします。)
Rosemarie whiled away the afternoon watching reruns of her favorite show. (ローズマリーは午後ずっとお気に入りのショーの再放送を見ていました。)

こちらに「whilst」と「while」と似ってる形の単語があります。

アメリカでは「among」をよく使い、イギリスでは「amongst」をよく使います。そして、アメリカでは「amid」をよく使い、イギリスでは「amidst」をよく使います。
