日本人が間違えやすい英文法 10 – 従属接続詞、等位接続詞

非ネイティブの人が英作文をする時、*従属接続詞(subordinating conjunctions)をどうやって適材適所に使用すべきか多少紛らわしい場合があります。特に従属接続詞を文章の最初に書いた後、カンマを打って2つの文章を連結する場合、自然な文章構造のためには*等位接続詞(coordinating conjunctions)を使うことになります。しかし、この場合に等位接続詞を挿入したら、文法的に間違った表現になります。次の例を見てみましょう。

*等位接続詞: 単語、句、節を対等に連結する一般的な接続詞で、どんな品詞でも簡単に連結します。 (例: and, but, or, so, for etc.)

*従属接続詞: 独立節を従属節に連結し、主節と従属節を表します。主節は、文章の最初もしくは2番目に位置することができ、従属節は従属接続詞の後に付いて主節を強調する役割(情報提供)をします。(例:when, since, becuase, now that, in case etc.)

Example 1: Although it was raining yesterday, but Billie still ran three laps around the neighborhood.
→ Although it was raining yesterday, Billie still ran three laps around the neighborhood.

Example 2: Since the last tax season already ended in April, so you should file for late tax returns.
→ Since the last tax season already ended in April, you should file for late tax returns.

Example 3: After we submitted the marketing proposal for a new campaign, and then we went out to dinner at our favorite pizza place.
→ After we submitted the marketing proposal for a new campaign, we went out to dinner at our favorite pizza place.

等位接続詞は、2 つの独立した節をつなぐ場合に使用します。しかし、従属した節は単独で使えません。したがって、最も簡単に校正する方法は、従属節の後に等位接続詞なしでカンマを挿入することです。また、等位接続詞の代わりに従属接続詞を削除して正しい文章に校正することもできます。

Example 1: Although it was raining yesterday, but Billie still ran three laps around the neighborhood.
→ It was raining yesterday, but Billie still ran three laps around the neighborhood.

Example 2: Since the last tax season already ended in April, so you should file for late tax returns.
