In a Day vs. On a Dayの意味、違い、例

「In a day」は時間の長さを表し、「on a day」は特定の日付を指します。「In a day」は、一日以内に発生することを表し、「一日のうち、ある日に」という意味でも使用できます。一方、「on a day」は、特定の日付を指す時に使われます。

1日(24時間)以内に起きた出来事に対して、In a dayという表現を使います。次の例を見てみましょう。

Suzy finished the project in a day.

文章で主語のSuzyは、1日以内にプロジェクトを終えました。つまり、‘24時間以内’に完了したという意味です。

On a dayは、普段の日々とは別の日を表したい時に使います。この場合、この別の日は、普段の日とは異なる何かがあるか、行動や事件が発生したことを意味します。

文章を解釈してみると、NateはZoeにプロポーズをする計画ということがわかります。しかし、主語の私は、あいにくその日がプロポーズするに最適ではないとのニュアンスを伝えています。

「On the day」は、特定の日を表す場合に使用します。

James resigned on the day of the company-wide pay raise.

上記の文章で、Jamesは会社が全職員に給与引き上げを発表した「日」に会社を辞めました。つまり、特定の時点を示す場合に、On the dayを使うことができます。
