海外就職、特にアメリカに就職するためには、英文カバーレターが必要です。人事担当者によっては、カバーレターなしで履歴書だけを提出した志願者に対しては、最初から採用対象から排除する場合もあります。一方、履歴書だけでも充分に評価できると判断し、カバーレターを要求しない企業もあります。企業によって採用の手順と必須書類が異なりますが、カバーレターに関する別途の案内がない場合、作成して提出することをお勧めします。

レターのヘッド

カバーレターのヘッドの書式とデザインは、一貫性のために履歴書と一致させます。カバーレターの本文は、履歴書の本文と同じフォントを使用する必要があり、文書のすべての面に対して1インチの余白を残します。ここに名前と連絡先(電話番号、住所、メールアドレスを含む)を記載します。 Webサイト、もしくはLinkedInプロファイルへのリンクを入力してもいいです。

日付とあいさつ

カバーレターのヘッドの下には、月、日、年度(イギリスの企業に志願する場合は、日、月、年度）順に日付を記入します。

以下は、挨拶部分の例です。

  • Dear [NAME OF THE HIRING MANAGER]
  • Dear hiring manager,
  • Dear [COMPANY TEAM NAME]

とりあえず採用担当者への挨拶から始めます。可能であれば、採用担当者の氏名を記載するのが一番いいです。採用の担当者名を確認するため努力したというポイントも良い印象を与えられます。もし、担当者名が見つからない場合は、担当者の職責、もしくはチーム名を書きます。

本文

カバーレター本文の最初の段落では、志望しているポジションをもう一度明確に記載します。なぜその仕事や企業に関心を持って、志願することになったのかについて説明します。一般的な内容は、以下の通りです。

  1. 志望するポジションが自分の進路と関連がある
  2. 志望するポジションが情熱を持ってる分野である

ここで重要なことは、志望ポジションについて徹底的に調査しておくことです。該当ポジションの主な役割は何なのか、そして様々な役割の中でどういったところが特に自分の進路や関心分野と一致するのかについて、正確に理解してこそ良いカバーレターを書くことができます。最悪のケースは、 候補者のカバーレターがだれかのものをコピー&ペイストした印象を与えることです。採用担当者は、カバーレターを丁寧に作成した候補者を好みます。

最初の段落を書く際に、内容があまり長くならないように注意します。重要な内容は、2番目と3番目の段落で詳しく述べることになります。

2番目と3番目の段落では、自分がなぜ該当ポジションに理想的な候補者であるか、具体的な資格やスキルを挙げて説明します。その企業のためにどういった役割を果たすか、企業が直面している重要な事案に対してどのように役に立つか、具体的に記述します。多数の業績を述べるよりは、1つ～2つの最も注目できる内容を盛り込むのが効果的です。

本文は、1枚の半分の分量で作成する必要があります。カバーレターは、レターヘッド、日付と挨拶、本文、結びの言葉を含めて1ページを超えないようにするのが基本です。もし、経歴と業績が多すぎて1ページに収めないなら、志望ポジションと最も関連ある経歴・業績を1つか2つだけ選択して作成する方がいいです。 本人の経歴やスキルに対する情熱と自信を表現することはいいですが、傲慢に見えないように注意します。

結びの言葉

カバーレターの最後には、結びの言葉とともに自分の氏名を書きます。以下は、最後の文章として適切な例示です。

  • Thank you for your time and consideration.
  • I’m looking forward to hearing back from you.
  • Hope to hear back from you soon.
  • I look forward to discussing my candidacy for this position.
  • I would love to further discuss my candidacy for the position of [POSITION NAME].

結びの言葉は、以下のような種類があります。
