Anymore vs. Any moreの意味、違い、例

「Anymore」は副詞で、「これ以上は」または「もはや…ない」という意味を持ち、これ以上起こらないことなどを表現するときによく使います。一方、「Any more」は語句で、「もう少し」もしくは「いくつか」という意味を持ち、一般的に他の単語と一緒に使用されます。

では、次のうち正しい表現は何でしょうか。

I can’t take it anymore. Or… I can’t take it any more.

「I can't take it anymore.」が正しい表現です。 AnymoreとAny moreの表記上の違いは、スペースの有無しかありませんが、その意味と脈絡は全く異なります。

Anymore: any longer; used to describe a duration of time

Any more: any additional; used to describe quantities of a noun

Anymoreは、時間(期間)を表現するときに使用されます。「If you can't take it anymore」は「もう我慢できない」という意味です。つまり、現在の時点でこれ以上の時間を費やすことはできないとのことです。

Any moreは名詞の数量(量)を表すときに使用されます。みなさんが農場でリンゴを摘んでいると想定してみましょう。ところで、急に腕が痛くなって疲れました。こういった場合、「I cannot pick any more apples」と表現し、「これ以上リンゴを取ることができない」と言えます。ここで「any more」は、リンゴを修飾しています。つまり、数えることができる名詞のリンゴを指しているので、「any more」が正しい表現になります。

Raymond did not want to run competitively anymore.

上記の文章で、Raymondはこれ以上競争して走りたくありません。「これ以上の時間を」走りたくないと表現しているので、anymoreを使うことができます。

Winona could not eat any more pie because she was too full.

Winonaは、お腹がいっぱいでもうパイを食べられないと言っています。パイは数えることができる名詞であり、上記の文章でany moreが指す対象はパイです。したがって、any moreは正しい表現です。

Timothy did not have any more space on his computer to store his photos.

Timothyのコンピュータは、写真を保存できないほどいっぱいになっています。つまり、空間という数えることができる概念を示しているので、any moreが正しい表現です。Any moreは、リンゴのような数量と、コンピュータ容量のように連続的な数量を指す時に使用できます。

Now that he got what he wanted, Tate did not whine anymore.

上記の文章では、anymoreが適切な表現です。Tateはこれ以上文句を言わないという未来の状況を話しています。時間の範囲を直接に表しているからです。

Jesse did not solve any more math questions than his sister did.

Jesseは、妹より多い数学問題を解くことができませんでした。したがって、上記では、any moreを使用することができます。

上記の文章は、少しややこしいかもしれません。文章内で時間を表現していますが、単位としての時間を話しています。上記の例で、anymoreは普通文章の最後に位置することが分かります。それは、anymoreが動詞を修飾する副詞だからです。一方、any moreは文章内でリンゴ、コンピュータ容量、パイなどの数えることができる名詞を指す時に使います。また、その名詞が文章から省略された場合にも、any moreは次の例のように使うことがあります。Do you have any more (apples)？
